The minor is a part of the Department of Educational Foundations and Exceptionalities, a program within the College of Education.
The non-licensure minor program in TESOL is designed for students in various fields, who wish to acquire professional knowledge related to teaching English to speakers of other languages, but who do not want to pursue Virginia teaching licensure. Students will acquire skills in cross-cultural competence, understand and implement more equitable and effective ways of working with English learners (ELs), and become familiar with the processes of first and second language acquisition. Students will gain a foundational knowledge of effective teaching practices to assist and assess ELs.
The requirement for a minor in TESOL is 19 credit hours; 16 credit hours are required core courses and 3 credit hours are electives selected in consultation with a program adviser.
