The Center for Global Engagement presents International Week 2024.

Join us for an exciting week of events celebrating JMU’s international communities. Let’s come together to embrace the incredible diversity of our campus: explore new cultures, eat new food, and learn about opportunities to study abroad.  No matter what you choose to participate in, I-Week is your passport to good company, good food, and good vibes.

2024 I-Week Student Photo Contest

Voting: Now through 9/28

Categories: A) Nature B) People C) Architecture D) Miscellaneous

Prizes: Each category will have three finalists whose photos will be printed and displayed during I-Week.
Winning photos will be selected by you and announced after I-Week.

  • Finalists receive $25 Flex cash + framed print of their photo
  • Category winners receive $50 Flex cash + framed print of their photo
  • Grand prize winner receives $99 Flex cash + framed print of their photo

Winners will be announced October 7th

International Student Hike with UREC

In celebration of I-Week, UREC Adventure and International Student & Scholar Services are working in collaboration to offer a hiking experience for international students and American students to explore together. Registered participants will ride together in a UREC van out to the High Knob trail head for a 2.7 mile out and back hike. Lunch will be provided! Participants must wear closed toed shoes. Contact isss@jmu.edu to reserve your spot.

Keynote Speaker - Shalini Kantayya

Join us for the kickoff of International Week 2024 with an inspiring keynote speaker, Shalini Kantayya. Shalini is a renowned filmmaker and director known for her work on social justice, technology, and the environment. She is one of the leading voices at the intersection of renewable energy, artificial intelligence ethics, social equity, and the societal impacts of technology. The event will also include an excerpt from her 2022 film, “TikTok, Boom.” Don’t miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights from Shalini Kantayya!

CODED BIAS – a documentary from Shalini Kantayya

CODED BIAS explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all. Vegan Around The World

Learn how to make unique dishes from around the world. This class will different vegan recipes from around the world and learn the benefits of a vegan diet. This class will highlight the health benefits and variety of a vegan diet. Spots are limited. Register now!

International Bazaar

  • Location: Warner Commons

The International Bazaar is a free event that will feature vendors, food, music, displays, and entertainment in the heart of campus. Vendors and student groups, bringing merchandise from around the world, will be there. Don’t forget to bring cash – this will be a great place to pick up gifts for your friends and family or splurge on something for yourself!

Exploring Global Opportunities: Navigating International Internships, Fellowships, and Globally Focused Careers with CISR

This panel discussion hosted by JMU's Center for International Stabilization & Recovery will cover opportunities for international internships and fellowships, and globally focused domestic internships. You will gain valuable insights from JMU experts on how to identify these opportunities, navigate the application process, and follow best practices to enhance your prospects. Study Abroad Fair

Interested in going abroad? Come and learn about different study abroad programs that await – India, Ireland, Japan, Spain, and South Africa… the JMU list of programs goes on to include 90+ different programs in 50+ countries around the world. JMU semester, short-term, and graduate program directors and representatives will be available to share their experience and to answer your questions. Designed to help people live long lives, the blue zone dietary pattern mimics the diets found in the geographic areas with lower rates of chronic diseases and longer life expectancy. Complicated Beauty: Portraits of Ghana Gallery Opening

Landon Shackelford, a sophomore SMAD and International Affairs major, built trusting relationships with locals during his 4-week study abroad program in Ghana. Harrisonburg International Festival

The Harrisonburg International Festival is returning to downtown Harrisonburg this year with an exciting new format! There will be international food trucks and artisan booths, catch up with friends and neighbors at the Global Village, businesses will be hosting entertainment, educational, and interactive “pop-ups” of all kinds. Get out and experience Harrisonburg’s diverse culture and the festival’s longstanding ethos: “Educate, Entertain, and Eat!”
