The program will prepare graduates to work collaboratively and interprofessionally as a foundation for careers in nutrition and dietetics.

In the James Madison University Didactic Program in Dietetics, students use creativity in learning from classroom and service-learning experiences, simulated skills practice, case studies, computer applications, and problem-solving and decision-making projects. You will gain research experience real-life experiences by completing a hospital-based practicum covering all aspects of the dietetics practice.

The major is a part of the Department of Health Professions, an academic unit within the College of Health and Behavioral Studies.

As a dietetics major, students will complete coursework requirements to pursue careers in nutrition and dietetics and will be exposed to all facets of this dynamic profession. Students interested in earning the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential  should plan to meet the experience requirements for registered dietitian status by completing a dietetic internship (DI). The Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) offered through the Professional program concentration at JMU is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Students earn a verification upon completion of the Professional concentration for dietetic internship eligibility. The Pre-Professional program concentration is a foundation for students pursuing health profession graduate programs.

Students will study a wide variety of subjects including food and nutrition science, chemistry, physiology, anatomy and microbiology. Graduates may work in a wide variety of employment settings including health care, business and industry, community/public health, education, research, and government agencies.
