Intuitive Eating Workshop

This workshop is for those interested in nourishing nutritional well-being from a mindful, non-diet approach. Participants will be guided in practices that build capacity to listen to the wisdom of hunger / fullness cues, catch and reframe negative defeating eating messages, rediscover the satisfaction factor of food, increase body respect and ultimately honor health through joyful movement and gentle nutrition. If you are seeking peace in your relationship with food and body, this is a non-judgement space for you to begin healing. All are welcome. Passport Event. Facilitator: Heather Harris, RD. Mindful Holiday Eating

This program is designed to help you navigate the various dynamics of holiday eating while tending to your nutrition needs and well-being. Limit: 25. Register on Be Involved.

Food Allergy Support

This workshop is for students navigating food allergies on campus. Campus and community food allergy resources will be discussed, as well as practical ways to safely meet your allergy needs in the dining halls. Guidance for navigating conversations with roommates will be offered. Come for mutual support and sharing of ideas!

Nutrition Counseling: 

The University Health Center offers nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian, Heather Harris, RDN. She will work with you to create a nutrition plan that helps you achieve your personal health goals in a supportive and encouraging environment. 

Our registered dietitian can help with:

  • Nutrition Therapy for the following diagnoses: diabetes, hypoglycemia, food allergies, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, hypertension, hyperlipidemia
  • Eating disorders
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Vegetarian or vegan diet advice
  • Vitamin or mineral deficiency related to diet

Nutrition consultations are available Monday - Thursday during the fall and spring semesters. To make your first nutrition appointment, call the Health Center at 540-568-6178.

Prior to making your first appointment, you must complete:

  • The Nutrition First Visit Form on MyJMUChart.  Log into MyJMUChart, then select the JMU General Medicine and GYN Clinic. Then under the FORMS along the left tool bar, choose the Nutrition First Visit form only.
  • a daily food record (3 days would be ideal) and bring it with you to your visit

These will provide the dietitian with valuable information so that she may better assess and assist you when you meet.

During the initial session the Registered Dietitian will begin an assessment, discuss your nutrition needs, and make recommendations to improve your nutritional health.  She will help you identify dietary goals to work on and help you develop a plan to accomplish your goals.

After your initial appointment, you can schedule 40 minute follow-up appointments with the dietitian. Follow-up visits may be scheduled at the end of your appointment or by calling 540-568-6178 (select option 2).

To cancel or reschedule a Nutrition appointment requires a One hour notification or a $25.00 fee will be assessed.Cancellations can be made online through your MyJMUChart.
