Join colleagues for a brief read and dialogue to explore how to balance flexibility and structure in the classroom.
In a recent Chronicle of Higher Education article, “Course Correction,” Beckie Supiano argues that while students demand flexibility, they might be better served with the right balance of flexibility and structure, particularly in a pandemic-altered world where, despite claims otherwise, “neither professors nor students are fine.”
In this one-time, 60-minute Read and Dialogue, we will discuss the short article "Course Correction" and explore ways that we can support each other in finding balance.
As with other events in this series, we will spend our time discussing how relevant the ideas are to our current context, how we might apply them to our own teaching, what questions or critiques we have about the claims and conclusions, and anything else the group wants to explore in the time allotted. This group is intentionally designed to require very little time commitment, given the burnout and exhaustion that we recognize everyone is feeling these days.
