Center for Faculty Innovation

The CFI welcomes Dr. Kristin Phillips from Virginia Tech to talk about using neuroscience to understand best practices in teaching.

Active learning strategies abound, but making the right choice and knowing how to implement them can be daunting. Understanding why certain teaching strategies are effective for learning is just as important as understanding how to use them. Neuroscience has provided valuable insights into how the brain learns.

This interactive talk will translate neuroscience findings into practical advice for implementing various teaching strategies, promoting engagement, and addressing barriers to learning. By understanding the neuroscience of learning, educators can use neuroscience as a frame for understanding why active-learning pedagogies are effective.

Kristin Phillips is a Collegiate Associate Professor in the School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech. She has a PhD in Pharmacology & Toxicology from VCU where she studied acquired epilepsy and nerve agents. At VT, she teaches a wide range of neuroscience courses where she promotes real-world application and collaboration. Her goal is to demonstrate the vast implications that arise from understanding how the brain works.
