Center for Faculty Innovation

Attend this talk to learn three strategies for creating clear, explicit assignments.

We all create and grade assignments in our courses, ranging from quizzes to papers to group presentations. These assignments help us assess our students' learning, but they can also present challenges. You might create an assignment, but when students turn something in, it's not at all what you were expecting; the quality is terrible! Or you might create an assignment and, even though they complete it, students complain that it's busy work; they don't get the significance of what you're asking them to do! Or you might be inundated with questions from students about the assignment that take too much of your time to answer; they seem completely lost!

This talk will introduce participants to the Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) framework, a guide for creating clear, explicit assignments. Transparent assignments are easier for students to understand and follow, and, hopefully, will be more enjoyable for you to review and grade. By adopting a transparent approach to assignment design, you'll be helping students from underserved groups, especially.
