Tue, 16 Apr 2024 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Join colleagues to discuss the book chapter, “Beyond Essentialism: Situating Gender and Academic Publishing” and exchange ideas around the gender, academic position and status, research productivity, and performance evaluation. This book chapter is from the book, entitled, “Women in Scholarly Publishing: A Gender Perspective” (Chapter 7, p.99-110). An e-copy is available for download through JMU libraries.
JMU faculty of all genders, AUHs, and AUPAC members are welcome to share around the following key questions:
- How does essentialism (i.e., the belief that men and women are fundamentally different in an inherent and unchangeable way) play a role in justifying stigmatizing, stereotyping and oppression in academia?
- How do gendered expectations and systems affect the ways we interact with colleagues and students as well as approach writing and publication?
- What is the role of situatedness in understanding gender differences in productivity and how can we use it in our spheres of influence?
Date & Time: Tuesday, 4/16, 12 - 1 PM
Location: Online (The Zoom link will be provided either with the email registration confirmation or by email the day before the event.)
Facilitator: Shin Ji Kang, COE & CFI
Genre: Read & Dialogue
