As we move into the midpoint of the semester, we are beginning to reflect on what has worked and what has not worked in measuring and fostering student learning through our various class assignments. As we move our reflections into making changes in our teaching, either this semester or next, let’s work in community to crowdsource ideas, and, most of all, support one another.
For this session, please bring an example of an in-class or out of assignment or idea around measuring or foster learning: something that can be quickly shared (under 3 minutes) and has made a difference in student learning, made your grading easier, or made assessing student learning more enjoyable for you and students. This might include simple-to-implement in-class assignment techniques; assignment language that helps build confidence in completing an assignment and encourages student engagement; feedback statements you have found useful to share with students post-assignment to support motivation and help seeking; sample rubrics or sources that have made rubric writing easier; quick technology tools that have made it grading easier; or other ideas you have tried that had a positive impact on you and your students—or even ones you want to try or techniques you are seeking to improve.
We want this to be a fun, and non-intimidating, opportunity to connect; so, no pressure—we’re not asking for “excellent,” “best,” or super broad or revolutionary teaching strategies, and no one’s going to offer critiques. The aim is that in offering up one small teaching idea, you’ll leave with plenty more from our shared community.
