Center for Faculty Innovation

One aspect of CFI programs that faculty at JMU routinely appreciate is the interdisciplinary or cross-campus nature, that is, participants have a chance to meet others and share tips and strategies with fellow educators outside of their immediate department or college.

This program aims to provide an opportunity to observe and learn from others’ teaching, outside the context of high-stakes evaluations from a PAC or AUH. Participants will be placed in teams of 3 (thus the triangle) and visit one another’s classes. You get to decide what class your colleagues will visit. They will then reciprocate. The emphasis is NOT on providing an evaluation of one another’s teaching practice. Rather, it is appreciative, where each member of the triangle will seek to discover, appreciate, and learn from one another’s teaching practices, i.e., it is a self-reflective learning process done in collaboration with others.

To orient everyone to the program we will have an online, synchronous meeting on Monday, March 10 from 2:00 - 3:00 PM.  At the end of the semester on Monday, April 28 from 2:00 - 3:00 PM, we will have an online, synchronous discussion to share our reflections and maybe even some strategies that we tried out after observing colleagues.

Following is an outline of the time commitment

  • March 10, 2:00 PM: Attend an orientation to the program (Teaching Triangles will be assigned at this time and time will be provided to meet your team and set up an observation schedule)
  • Between March 11 - April 7: Visit one another’s classroom (a personal reflective guide will be provided for the observations)
  • Between April 8 - April 25: Members reflect on what they have learned and maybe even try out some techniques in their own classroom
  • April 28, 2:00 PM: Attend a program wrap-up meeting (time will be provided for Teaching Triangles to meet to share their personal reflections along with a whole group reflection on the program)

Please use the survey link below to register and share more about the class(es) you wish to open up for your colleagues to observe.

Space is limited!

The online, synchronous meeting link for March 10 and April 28 will be provided with a reminder email prior to the orientation meeting on March 10. This link will be used for both meetings.
