Description:
Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training course that teaches participants to identify, understand and respond to mental health and substance use challenges.
Note: Each participant will receive a pdf virtual copy of the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) book. The course consists of a MANDATORY 2-hour self-paced online pre-course to be completed before attending the 6-hour in-person training session. For a more comfortable experience, the in-person session is extended to 7.5 hours, allowing for two 15-minute breaks and a 1-hour lunch. You are welcome to bring your lunch or use the time to purchase something nearby.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the signs and symptoms, risk factors, mental health and crisis first aid as well as treatment and resources for the following disorders: substance-related, anxiety and trauma-related, mood-related, and psychotic related.
- Define Mental Health First Aid as well as the five basic actions of Mental Health First Aid.
- Recognize the impact of stigma and discrimination in relation to Mental Health.
- Implement a curious and person-centered approach to inquire about a person’s mental wellbeing.
- Identify signs of mental distress or illness.
- Managing acute distress or risk issues related to a range of mental health conditions.
