Description:
Have you ever expressed an opinion that led others to become defensive or hostile—even if you didn’t mean it personally? Many people have reasons for believing they’re being attacked and this can create a chain of defensiveness that weaves through relationships, reducing productivity and making good communication difficult. In this session we focus on causes and symptoms of defensive behavior, and the five skills for breaking the chain of defensive communication in yourself and monitoring ourselves so we avoid eliciting defensiveness in others.
In this workshop participants will:
- Recognize the signs of defensiveness in ourselves and others
- Understand how defensiveness can result in a ‘defensiveness chain’
- Take responsibility for the way we communicate by improving our self esteem and refraining from blaming others for our own mistakes
- Implement five skills of non-defensive communication
