SUMMARY: “This is important work, and the response of the JMU community has been extraordinary,” says Nick Langridge, vice president for university advancement. “As the number of financial aid appeals continues to increase, we are raising our sights to keep 150 Dukes in school this fall.” Achieving that goal will require reaching $750,000 by May 31 for these one-time emergency awards.

Dukes around the world responded immediately and enthusiastically to the Madison for Keeps Challenge on Giving Tuesday and raised $500,000 to help 100 Dukes stay Dukes. Taking just over 24 hours to rise to a challenge meant for the entire month of May, giving now stands at nearly $545,000 — and a new $750,000 goal has been set.

“This is important work, and the response of the JMU community has been extraordinary,” says Nick Langridge, vice president for university advancement. “As the number of financial aid appeals continues to increase, we are raising our sights to keep 150 Dukes in school this fall.”

Madison for Keeps, May 2020Achieving that goal will require raising $750,000 by May 31 for these one-time emergency awards. JMU estimates that the average award necessary to keep a student (who files an appeal for aid) in school will be $5,000 this coming year.

“If you have not had a chance to join us, it’s not too late,” Langridge says. “We still need your help to be able to offer an emergency scholarship to every JMU family who needs one.”

The JMU Office of Financial Aid has already received more than 155 requests from families dealing with the financial fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. That number will continue to grow. The 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years are anticipated to be the most demanding years ever for emergency appeals.

“In the midst of one of the toughest times in memory, Dukes are showing up for Dukes,” Langridge says. “The momentum is undeniable and our mission is clear: Help Dukes stay Dukes.”
