James Madison University was recently selected as one of 14 higher education institutions to join the inaugural class of FirstGen Forward’s Network Champion Institutions.

JMU was chosen as a national leader in advancing first-generation efforts and contributing to evidence-based practices, leadership engagement and scaling students supports, according to the organization, formerly the Center for First-generation Student Success.

About 16% of JMU’s undergraduate population is considered first-generation.

In 2023, JMU celebrated a significant milestone with the graduation of the first ever cohort from its Valley Scholars program. The program for first-generation students was developed in partnership with seven local school divisions. Additionally, The Reddix Center for First Generation Students was established the same year, offering an on-campus environment where students can study, connect with peers and receive guidance from mentors.

“We know that First-Generation Student Success programs have life-changing, positive impacts for our students to thrive in and out of the classroom, and we are honored to be recognized as a leader in the effort to elevate these students and their families,” said Shaun Mooney, JMU’s executive director for First Generation Student Success.

“This recognition reaffirms JMU’s commitment to providing a transformative educational experience for all students, regardless of their background,” added Mooney.
