On Friday, Nov. 8, the James Madison University Board of Visitors voted to move forward with studying the future of the university’s presidential home.

The university is currently in a unique time of transition that has afforded the board an opportunity to explore the housing for the next president. It is important to develop this plan prior to the arrival of the next president.

The home of a university president is multi-faceted and used for purposes beyond a residence. The presidential home is an extension of campus facilities and utilized for hosting university events, faculty, staff, students and guests. It is important that the facilities be accommodating to all.

History of Oakview

In 1979, the JMU Foundation gifted the university Oakview, which continues to serve as the current presidential home. For many years, this home served its intended purpose; however, the role and expectations of the president and this space have increased over the years. Oakview is not ADA compliant, nor does it offer adequate space for personal and family living, hosting gatherings and guests. Given the age and layout of this property, it would not be feasible, nor fiscally responsible, to bring Oakview into ADA compliance. In addition, the outdated systems result in energy consumption of nearly three times greater than that of a more modern home.

Plan Moving Forward

The plan moving forward is to conduct a feasibility study on pieces of property that the university already owns as a potential site of a new residential home. The priorities of this study will include the following: creating a space that is sustainable with state-of-the-art and energy efficient systems, fully accessible and ADA compliant, with adequate parking for events of all size and a shared living and entertaining space. The findings will also provide clarity on the timeline and estimated financial investment. Should a new home be constructed, the financial investment would be made by the JMU Foundation, and the preference of the board would be to sell Oakview.

The JMU Board of Visitors is committed to a thorough evaluation of options and ensuring the campus community is well-informed. Updates will be provided as additional information is collected.
