The Forbes Center for the Performing Arts welcomes the acclaimed vocal ensemble Cantus on Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Known for their “suave, smooth, and perfect vocal blending” (The Boston Musical Intelligencer), Cantus will bring their powerful new program, Wanting Memories, to the stage.

Wanting Memories explores the deep bond between music and memory through stunning vocal harmonies and heartfelt storytelling. Cantus invites us to consider: “Why is it that we can recall the lyrics and melody of a song from our childhood, but we struggle to find our keys in the morning, or find ourselves unable to remember peoples’ names? Time and age can cause organized memories to gradually become a maze of fragments, but music often remains the one thing that helps us to remember who we are. As memory fades, is music the final conduit for our memories and connection to our past?”

James Madison University’s Madison Singers will also join Cantus on stage for a special performance during the program. The Madison Singers are an advanced, auditioned choral chamber ensemble at JMU. Performing with renowned guest artists at the Forbes Center offers students an invaluable experience, allowing them to work directly with top professionals and deepen their artistry through collaborative performances at the highest level.

In Wanting Memories, Cantus delves into how music can revive memories and spark joy, even for those affected by memory loss and dementia. Through this inspiring program, they seek to break down stigmas, offering hope, understanding and connection.

Anchored by Ysaÿe M. Barnwell’s moving piece “Wanting Memories,” the program features beloved songs like “Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World.” These timeless classics traverse the emotions of nostalgia, love and loss, highlighting music’s unique role in connecting us to our past.

Don’t miss the chance to experience Cantus live and be moved by the power of song. Student, faculty and general admission tickets are available now online at jmuforbescenter.com, in person at the box office, or by calling 540.568.7000.
