(CNN) North Korean troops have faced multiple casualties from landmine explosions while setting up explosives and anti-tank barriers along the demilitarized zone (DMZ) since January, according to the South Korean military. This heightened activity, monitored by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), occurs amid increased tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has intensified his rhetoric and abandoned efforts for peaceful reunification. Incidents such as trash-filled balloons and resumed loudspeaker propaganda from the South have further strained relations. Recently, North Korean soldiers briefly crossed into the South, prompting warning shots from South Korean troops.
