Fighting Gender-Based Violence in South Sudan

(Radio Tamazuj) The Women Advancement Organization (WAO), a National Non-Governmental Organization in South Sudan, has implemented comprehensive mechanisms to combat and mitigate gender-based violence (GBV) and support survivors in obtaining justice and psychological assistance. Through a project funded by Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), WAO has reached thousands in Central Equatoria State’s Juba County, focusing on grassroots GBV survivors.

Their initiatives include documenting GBV cases, offering psychosocial support through health centers and police units, and providing pro-bono legal services. WAO also facilitates transportation for survivors to report and follow up on cases, engages local authorities in dialogues on women’s rights, and organizes community campaigns to raise awareness on GBV and gender discrimination.
