WWII Battlefield Cleared of 4,700 Explosive Remnants of War

(Newsweek) More than 4,700 dangerous objects, including explosives, have been removed from the Westerplatte peninsula, the site of the Battle of Westerplatte, the first battle of World War II in Europe. This project, led by the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk since 2016, has involved the Polish Army and private specialists. The final stage of the project, covering 2.5 hectares, uncovered 49 dangerous items and over 180 historical artifacts.

In total, the project has cleared over 13 hectares, revealing aircraft bombs, artillery shells, grenades, and other military remnants, as well as historical items like cannonballs, coins, and stove tiles, evidencing earlier conflicts and the presence of the Polish Military Transit Depot.
