(AP News) Japan's Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa announced a joint initiative with Cambodia to share landmine removal technology and expertise globally, focusing on aiding countries like Ukraine. This project leverages Cambodia's experience in demining, developed through decades of clearing millions of landmines left from its civil war. Cambodian deminers, some of the world's most experienced, have been instrumental in international demining efforts, particularly in Africa and the Middle East.
Japan will provide Ukraine with advanced demining equipment and training under the Japan Cambodia Landmine Initiative. This cooperation reflects Cambodia's unusual stance against Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its commitment to global mine action. Additionally, Japan and Cambodia signed agreements for financial aid to upgrade infrastructure and support educational programs. Kamikawa's visit also includes talks in the Philippines on a potential mutual defense pact.
