(Hmong Daily) In Laos, unexploded ordnance (UXO) left from the Vietnam War remains a deadly threat, as illustrated by Sera Koulabdara's childhood encounter with a classmate injured by a "bombie." Despite the war ending in 1975, UXO continues to maim and kill, prompting Koulabdara to flee Laos and eventually join the Legacies of War organization. As Executive Director and CEO, she has helped secure significant US funding for UXO clearance, ensuring progress in the removal of these hazards.

The organization, honored with the 2022 Humanitarian Award by Laos, has made strides in awareness and legislative support. Journalist Heather Atherton, deeply affected by her family's history with the war, has also joined Legacies of War, furthering its mission through advocacy and communication. Their combined efforts aim to clear the deadly remnants of war and bring hope for a safer future, highlighting the necessity of continued international support for demining efforts.
