(Khmer Times) The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) has successfully unearthed and safely disposed of a US-made M117 aerial bomb in the Kandal province, marking another significant step in clearing the region of unexploded ordnance (UXO). This bomb, weighing approximately 340 kg, was discovered buried in a paddy field in Kandal Steung district and was neutralized by CMAC’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

The M117 bomb, extensively used during the Vietnam War, is one of many remnants of decades-long conflicts that have plagued Cambodia. Since the beginning of the year, CMAC has removed numerous UXOs across several provinces, highlighting the persistent danger posed by leftover munitions. Cambodia remains one of the most heavily affected countries by landmines and UXO, with thousands of lives lost and tens of thousands injured or amputated since 1979 due to these deadly remnants of war.
