(Nation Thailand) During the first half of 2024, 692 people across Myanmar were either killed or injured due to landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO), with 32% of the victims being children, according to Unicef. A total of 420 incidents resulted in 102 civilian deaths and 590 injuries. The hardest-hit areas included Shan State, where 20 civilians were killed and 147 injured, and Sagaing Region, with 19 deaths and 99 injuries.
Rakhine State also saw significant casualties, with 15 deaths and 67 injuries. In other regions like Ayeyawady, Bago, and Kachin, there were 180 incidents resulting in 325 casualties. The widespread impact highlights the urgent need for enhanced risk education and clearance efforts to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children, from the ongoing threat of landmines and UXO in Myanmar.
