(BFSAI) On 31 August, two soldiers from Mount Pleasant Complex (MPC) in the Falkland Islands discovered a possible landmine at Cape Pembroke, near Stanley Airport. Due to water covering the item, the Police Incident Commander advised against approaching it. The Falkland Islands Defence Force (FIDF) established a cordon, and the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team was dispatched.
The EOD Operator identified an Anti-Vehicle Landmine containing 2kg of explosives, in near-perfect condition, making it as dangerous as when it was originally laid. The mine posed a significant threat but was safely destroyed in situ by demolition on 1 September during low tide. Private Morris and Lance Corporal Richards were commended for their quick reporting of the mine. FIDF played a critical role, maintaining a cordon overnight and assisting during the disposal operation.
