(ESRI) In recent years, significant progress has been made in clearing landmines, with Rwanda, Nicaragua, and Mozambique declared mine-free. However, ongoing conflicts, such as in Ukraine and the Middle East, have made the goal of a mine-free world by 2025 less attainable. New technologies, including drones and geographic information systems (GIS), are aiding in mine detection and clearance efforts by improving safety and accuracy.
Humanity & Inclusion's Odyssey 2025 project, in collaboration with Mobility Robotics, has introduced innovative methods, including thermal imaging and high-resolution mapping, which have proven effective in various terrains. Lessons learned from minefields in Chad are now being applied to Ukraine’s fresh conflict zones. The project’s technology is being shared globally, offering hope for more efficient minefield detection and clearance efforts. The continued expansion of these tools, as seen in Ukraine, aims to make mine clearance more scalable and accessible to local teams.
