U.S. Strengthens Peace and Stability in West Africa

(State.gov) The U.S. plays a key role in preventing conflict and promoting stability in Coastal West Africa through the Global Fragility Act (GFA). Coordinated across five embassies in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, and Togo, this whole-of-government initiative aims to address root causes of conflict by leveraging over $300 million. The effort involves partnerships with local governments, civil society, academia, and international bodies, focusing on integrated diplomacy, development, and defense.

A recent trip to Côte d’Ivoire highlighted U.S. support for refugee-hosting communities and peaceful coexistence projects. Meanwhile, ongoing democratic backsliding in Togo and Benin poses challenges, while Guinea is undergoing a fragile transition back to democratic rule. With significant funding and a focus on democratic institutions and governance, the GFA is critical in helping West African nations combat terrorism and preserve stability.
