(Macao News) Angola’s National Mine Action Agency (ANAM) has demined 1.7 million square meters of land in Bié Province from January to September 2024, collaborating with HALO Trust and the National Demining Centre (CND). The teams removed 12 anti-tank landmines, 17 anti-personnel landmines, 348 pieces of unexploded ordnance, and 100 rounds of ammunition. Currently, 25 areas are being demined, with 355 completed and 96 surveyed. More than 33,000 people, including children, have received mine awareness training.
Four accidents this year have resulted in six deaths and 13 injuries. Angola, heavily mined during its independence war and civil conflict, has made substantial progress since the war’s end in 2002, removing over 5 million explosives. ANAM aims to declare four more provinces mine-free by 2025, though it still needs $238 million to fully de-mine the country. The clearance enables rural development and improves safety for communities reliant on agriculture and livestock.
