(Khmer Times) The recent Innovation Session: Artificial Intelligence for Mine Action, hosted by GICHD in Geneva, highlighted the urgent need to integrate AI into mine action efforts. For three days, global leaders, AI experts, and humanitarian responders discussed how AI can transform landmine and UXO clearance by improving efficiency and safety. Although AI is not a magic solution, it offers significant potential when combined with experienced mine action personnel.
Key innovations include AI-powered risk education chatbots, knowledge assistants for field personnel, and impact assessment tools to prioritize urgent needs. The ASEAN Regional Mine Action Center (ARMAC) sees AI as critical to future demining efforts in Southeast Asia and aims to lead in adopting these technologies. By leveraging AI, ARMAC can enhance all five pillars of mine action—clearance, risk education, victim assistance, stockpile destruction, and advocacy—while ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities.
