(Independent) In 2023, Myanmar reported 1,003 landmine casualties, surpassing Syria. The surge followed the 2021 military coup, with mines deployed widely in civilian areas. Civilians, including children, comprise most victims, accounting for 84% of global casualties. The Mine Ban Treaty, signed by 164 countries, prohibits mines and mandates victim aid and clearance.
