(Radio Free Asia) Residents in central Myanmar report that junta troops at security checkpoints on the Monywa-Mandalay Highway are forcing civilians to clear suspected landmine fields. This dangerous practice began in early November, targeting middle-aged travelers from three key checkpoints near Myay Ne, Mon Yway, and Taw Pu villages. Civilians are compelled to inspect areas deemed suspicious after vehicle searches, often for up to an hour.

Although no casualties have been reported yet, the risk is significant, prompting a decline in highway travel. Myanmar saw 1,003 landmine-related deaths in 2023, the highest globally, per the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Both junta and rebel forces deny responsibility for mine usage, yet landmines remain a growing threat in a country torn by conflict since the 2021 coup.
