(Al-Jazeera) Birhane, a 16-year-old from a rural Tigray village, faced unimaginable tragedy while trying to save younger children from an explosive device. Once aspiring for education, his dreams were shattered by conflict, forcing him to help his family on their farm. One fateful day, he noticed children kicking what appeared to be scrap metal. Realizing it was a bomb, Birhane tried to intervene, but it exploded, costing him a leg and fingers.
While urban Tigray rebuilds after a peace agreement, rural areas remain littered with unexploded ordnance, which continues to kill and injure civilians, mostly children. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) rehabilitates survivors like Birhane but struggles to address the widespread impact. Communities, still haunted by war remnants, live with constant danger.
