(Odessa Journal) The HALO Trust and WWF-Ukraine have partnered to promote environmentally sustainable demining in Ukraine, focusing on restoring demined forest belts in Mykolaiv to preserve landscapes and strengthen climate resilience. This collaboration addresses war-related ecological damage, provides legal recommendations for sustainable land restoration, and advocates for eco-conscious demining nationwide.
HALO Trust's Pete Smith emphasized the connection between clearing explosives and protecting biodiversity, while WWF-Ukraine's Bohdan Vyhor highlighted nature restoration as central to rebuilding. With 30% of Ukraine's land contaminated by mines and over half of its territory consisting of arable land, sustainable solutions like agroforestry are critical. Contamination from explosives and chemicals endangers the environment, economy, and food security, making this partnership a vital step toward a holistic recovery strategy for Ukraine.
