(CEOBS) IThe Israeli-Hezbollah conflict in southern Lebanon caused widespread environmental and agricultural destruction, with over $1 billion in crop losses and $221 million in environmental damage. Urban areas like Tyre saw severe infrastructure damage, while debris from attacks contains hazardous materials, including asbestos.
Incendiary weapons like white phosphorus ignited fires, worsening soil and water quality and harming biodiversity. CEOBS and NPA identified environmental risks requiring monitoring and mine action activities. Longer-term impacts on soil, agriculture, and ecosystems necessitate further research and recovery efforts to protect public health and livelihoods in conflict-affected areas.
