Foundation Board of Trustees Meeting – May 18, 2018

 The JMU Foundation committee and board meetings were held on Friday, May 18^th at the Hotel Madison and Shenandoah Valley Conference Center.  President Alger began the new business with his annual report to the board.  He discussed interdisciplinary learning and community, civic, and global engagement at JMU.  He also reported on student successes as well as athletic achievements, leadership transitions and ongoing construction projects.  He concluded with a note of thanks to Mr. Tom Schaeffer, Foundation CEO, who is scheduled to retire on June 30.

 Mr. Schaeffer presented his CEO report for the last time, noting his annual accomplishments and new projects that are under way, which include implementing a new endowment management software and developing the real estate portfolio and trademark licensing program.  Ms. Cheryl Lindsay, Foundation CFO, reported on financial highlights through the first quarter and also noted ongoing projects. 

 Following the committee reports, Mr. Andy Perrine, Associate VP of Communications & Marketing, provided an update on rebranding at JMU.  Dr. Nick Langridge then addressed the current campaign progress. 

 Ms. Judy Strickler, Governance Committee Chair, presented a motion to approve the slate of officers and trustees for 2018-19.  The board approved Cliff Wood, Jr. as Chairman and Linda W. Cross as Vice Chairman.   Three new trustees were approved to join the Foundation board.  They are Dr. A. Jerry Benson, Mr. Larry W. Caudle, Jr., and Ms. Jennifer E. Shirkey.  Leaving the board as of June 30 are Mr. William S. Jasien and Ms. Christine M. Shelton.  Chair Wood then recognized the outgoing trustees and those trustees completing service as committee chairs.

 Mr. Warren Coleman, CEO elect, concluded the meeting with a SWOT analysis of both the Foundation and the Board.  The fall board meeting is scheduled for October 26, 2018.
