Break Description

A JMU student looks at a tiger in an enclosure

Eager to help protect wild cats? You’re not the only one! Come join us on this 2024 Fall Break in serving with Carolina Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro, NC!

The wild pet trade is the third-largest illegal trade internationally, which explains why there are many wild cats living in tight cages and small enclosures throughout the country. Carolina Tiger Rescue works to end this issue through rescue, education, and advocacy. They are home to ten species of animals, including tigers, lions, cougars, and kinkajous. Many of their animals have been rescued from dire situations where they were kept as pets, props in roadside zoos, or as residents of failing sanctuaries.

On past breaks, participants have helped build new enclosures and platforms, renovated existing enclosures, and assisted with groundskeeping and general maintenance tasks. We will be camping under the stars at a nearby North Carolina State Park so get ready to immerse yourself in a transformative environmental experience!

Join us as we invest our time and hard work in support of Carolina Tiger Rescue’s mission: "Saving and protecting wild cats in captivity and in the wild. We work toward a day when wild cats are living in their native habitat and are not exploited by humans."
