We offer four unique opportunities that help students grasp the essence of ethical and impactful leadership, fostering their self-awareness and capacity to lead effectively when the need arises. We provide opportunities for students engaged in service to cultivate and refine their leadership skills. Join our team of thoughtful and skilled leaders who drive meaningful social change. 

Alternative Break Program (ABP) 

Are you passionate about creating change? Join the Alternative Break Leadership team and lead a group of Dukes during Fall or Spring Break to work alongside community leaders to address pressing social issues.  

As a leader, you collaborate closely with a dedicated team of change-makers, planning and preparing your break alongside a co-leader. Through weekly workshops, community meetings, celebrations, and pre-break sessions, you delve into the heart of service-learning.  

Applications are available in October. 

CEVC Student Coordinators 

Are you passionate about service, leadership, and making a positive impact? Join our dynamic team of student coordinators. 

Student Coordinators recruit and support their peers, connect with faculty, and coordinate with community organizations to facilitate meaningful service experiences that meet community-identified priorities.  Examples of service experiences include Weekly Game Night with Open Doors, MLK Day of Service, Farmer’s Market Lunch and Learn, etc. 

This position requires a maximum of 10 hours per week during fall and spring semesters.

Applications are avaliable in March.

Dukes Making a Difference (DMAD) 

Did you previously participate in DMAD? Are you passionate about your experience and want to re-create that for new students? 

DMAD leaders guide a group of incoming First-Year and Transfer Students volunteering alongside fellow New Dukes. Together, you'll explore Harrisonburg's vibrant community, engage with pressing social issues, and connect with the incredible individuals and organizations shaping our community.  

Applications are available in March. 

Federal Work Study (FWS) 

If you've been awarded Federal Work Study and have a passion for engaging with the local community, our FWS Leadership program is an ideal opportunity. Students participating in FWS partner with a local non-profit or public school. Position examples include program support, marketing and communications, mentoring youth, and administrative support. Leaders play a vital role in making a positive impact in our community.

This position requires an average of 6 hours per week. Leaders gain experience in mentorship, cohort meetings, and training and reflection opportunities.
