JMU Garners Most Freshman Applications Ever in Centennial Year

HARRISONBURG - A record number of students have applied for admission to the freshman class at James Madison University for the 2008-09 academic year. 

JMU's admissions office has received more than 19,350 freshmen applications - up 4 percent from the current academic year's 18,600 freshmen applications, according to Michael D. Walsh, director of admissions. 

"As James Madison University celebrates its 100th anniversary, these application numbers truly validate our efforts over the years," said JMU President Linwood H. Rose. "This pool of applicants represents the first freshman class of the next JMU century and will ensure that the university continues to move forward as an innovative institution of higher education." 

"The number of applications for the freshman class is a reflection of the strong reputation James Madison University has in Virginia and throughout the eastern region of the nation," said Walsh of the admissions office. "The university historically has a strong academic record. That, coupled with the fact that our alumni and students - and even students who do not attend JMU - know that students are important here makes JMU a popular institution." 

Applicants will receive notifications on admission decisions April 1. A total of 3,960 spaces are available for 2008-09 freshman class enrollment.
