Remembering Virginia Tech

The James Madison University community will pause this week to remember the tragic shootings that occurred at Virginia Tech nearly one year ago. The following events are planned for Wednesday, April 16: 

All day - Flags will be flown at half-staff 

Noon - JMU will join the entire Virginia higher education community in a moment of silence to honor the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings 

8 p.m. - Student Government Association and Student Ambassadors will sponsor a candlelight vigil to honor those affected by the Virginia Tech shootings. The vigil will include vocal performances by Exit 245, a trio from the Contemporary Gospel Singers, and remarks from JMU President Dr. Linwood H. Rose. (Location: Festival Lawn, East Campus) 

In addition to the events planned for April 16, JMU's Student Government Association has enacted a memorial resolution which according to the resolution's text remembers "the tragic loss that happened to our friends and peers on that day of April 16, 2007." The resolution and a banner which says, "We remember our friends at Virginia Tech," were sent to Virginia Tech's Student Government Association. The banner is the same one which hung outside the UREC building shortly after last year's tragedy. 

JMU students will also join in an effort coordinated by University of Virginia students to purchase 32 trees to be planted on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg.
