Update on Oct. 17, 2020 at 1:44 pm:

What follows is an update related to what appears to have been an explosion, and subsequent fire that took place this morning off-campus at the Miller Circle area of S. Main Street. At this point, the only injuries we are aware of within the university community are to three JMU students, all of whom sustained minor injuries. We now know that two other individuals taken to the hospital are not affiliated with the university, and we wish them strength, and speed in their recovery.

Students involved in this incident are confirmed to be part of a group of about 30 individuals from JMU’s Army ROTC Program that were participating in a U.S. Army Ten Mile race in Harrisonburg, when a building within approximately 30 yards of the start and finish line seemingly exploded. The Counseling Center and Dean of Students have been in communication with all students who were present at this morning's event. These students have been notified of services and support available to them.

We remain thankful to all first responders. The incident is still actively under investigation by the City of Harrisonburg. For any students seeking mental health support, please contact JMU’s Counseling Center. Students can call 540-568-6552 and select “Option 1” to connect to the after-hours crisis line. Additionally, students can reach out to the Dean of Students at 540-568-6468.

Update on Oct. 17, 2020 at 10:44 am:

An incident and subsequent fire took place this morning at a commercial area off-campus at the Miller Circle area of S. Main Street, about a mile south of campus. Firefighters are still working on scene to put out the fire. Specific details on injuries are unknown at this time. The City of Harrisonburg is investigating.

Campus facilities have not been impacted, campus buildings are unaffected and campus operations are not disrupted. Students need to stay away from the area to allow first responders the space needed to work.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this incident. We will continue to update the university community as we learn more.
