Most years, Halloween means huge parties and scary frights. However, this year the holiday will look much different as we’re reminded to maintain a safe distance and stay within our social bubbles. But never fear, there are still plenty of fun outdoor activities that we can take part in.

JMU and area businesses are sponsoring some spooky events! Despite the ongoing pandemic, we can all still dress up, eat some candy and have a terrifyingly spooktacular time.

University Program Board is hosting two movie nights at Bridgeforth Stadium this weekend. UPB will be showing Ghostbusters on Friday and The Nightmare Before Christmas on Saturday. Both movies begin at 7:30 p.m. Masks are required, as is completion of the LiveSafe app. Tickets are free, but seats are limited, so be sure to preregister.

Greater Harrisonburg

Fear Forest, a haunted farm with three different walk-through attractions, is located at 6340 Oak Shade Road, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801.

Marceline Vineyards is hosting a Halloween Celebration with live music from Josh Davidson on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. You can find the vineyard at 5887 Cross Keys Road, Mount Crawford, Virginia 22841.

Massanutten Resort is hosting its first Monster Mash on the Mountain: Costume Party & Drive-In Movie! The costume contest registration begins at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. All other guests who are not participating in the contest should arrive at 5 p.m. The festivities will be located outdoors in the ski area parking lots. The featured movie, Hocus Pocus, will begin after sunset. Masks are required.

Haunted Nightmares is another haunted farm that features a corn maze, escape room, hayrides, a haunted mansion walk-through and more. Haunted Nightmare is located at Hill High Farm at 933 Barley Lane, Winchester, Virginia 22602.

Hull’s Drive-In theater is hosting its 8th annual Hull-O-Ween Bash, featuring Hocus Pocus and The Nightmare Before Christmas and a virtual costume contest on both Friday and Saturday. Tickets must be purchased in advance online. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to enter, including pets! The address is 2367 N. Lee Highway, Lexington, Virginia 24450.

Shenandoah Valley Campground, located on Bald Rock Road, Verona, Virginia 24482, is hosting a Halloween Festival Oct. 29-31, featuring a plethora of events and activities for people of all ages, including karaoke; child, adult and pet costume contests; campsitewide trick-or-treating; hayrides; dinners and more! Preregistration and reservations are encouraged.

With so many events and activities going on in our area, there is plenty to do this Halloween. So grab your friends within your social bubble and get spooky!
