JMU Board to take public comment on proposed tuition

JMU News

The James Madison University Board of Visitors will receive public comments virtually on the proposed tuition and fee ranges for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The public comment meeting will be on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, from 4 to 5 p.m. and will begin with an educational budget overview of tuition and fees and factors associated with setting these rates each year. Students and members of the community will then have an opportunity to share their comments with members of the Board of Visitors. Individuals have the opportunity to submit comments online ahead of the meeting, share comments during the public comment meeting or email comments (see below).  Comments submitted electronically will be provided to the Board of Visitors prior to the next full board meeting.

Tuition and fees are approved by the James Madison University Board of Visitors annually and, in accordance with section §23.1-307 (D) of the Code of Virginia, James Madison University is providing notice that the JMU Board of Visitors will consider tuition and mandatory fees for the 2021-22 academic year at its full board meeting on Friday, April 16, 2021.  Through the university’s continuous and thoughtful efforts to effectively maximize limited resources while emphasizing efficiency and affordability, the board was able to freeze tuition for Virginia students over the past two years with investments from the Commonwealth.

The Board of Visitors will consider the following Educational and General (E&G) tuition and mandatory auxiliary fee ranges for undergraduate and graduate students for the 2021-22 academic year, summer session 2021 and summer session 2022.

Academic Year 2021-22

  • Virginia undergraduate students – Annual tuition and E&G fee increase within a range between $0 and $282 or 0% and 3.9%; upper range $141 per semester
  • Non-resident undergraduate students – Annual tuition and E&G fee increase within a range between $0 and $236 or 0% and 1%; upper range $118 per semester
  • Virginia graduate students – Annual tuition and E&G fee increase within a range between $0 and $14 per credit hour or 0% and 3.1%
  • Virginia and Non-resident undergraduate students – Annual mandatory auxiliary fee increase within a range between $0 and $98 or 0% and 1.9%; upper range $49 per semester

Summer Session 2021

  • All undergraduate & graduate students – Proposed Tuition and E&G fee increase and mandatory auxiliary fee increase for summer 2021 session is $0 or 0%

Summer Session 2022

  • Virginia undergraduate students – Tuition and E&G fee increase within a range of between $0 and $14 per credit hour or 0% and 3.8%
  • Non-resident undergraduate students – Tuition and E&G fee increase within the range between $0 and $18 per credit hour or 0% and 1.9%
  • All students – Mandatory auxiliary fee increase within a range between $0 and $1 per credit hour or 0% and 4.2%

Tuition and auxiliary fee revenues will be used toward the university’s most important educational asset — its people — and the institutional share of state-mandated compensation, fringe benefits and health insurance premium increases for university employees and contract obligations. Student access continues to be a critical university priority; therefore, additional state and institutional resources of $1.8 million will be allocated to support financial aid.

JMU continues to be a leader in navigating pathways for student success, academic achievement and post-graduation employment while remaining an outstanding value with one of the lowest tuition rates among institutions in the Commonwealth.
