JMU President Charlie King celebrated the significant contributions wage employees make at JMU during an annual breakfast at Festival. JMU employs more than 400 wage (part-time) employees and about 100 of them attended the event.

JMU President Charlie King celebrated and recognized the significant contributions wage employees make at JMU during this year’s annual breakfast at Festival.

“First and foremost, thank you,” King said to the nearly 100 wage employees in attendance. “I am pleased to be here today to express my gratitude and appreciation. You play a significant role in the fabric of our institution. Your commitment, passion and unwavering effort contribute significantly to the success of JMU. I am grateful for your fresh perspectives, diverse experiences and wealth of knowledge.”

The JMU Human Resources Benefits Team and Balanced Dukes established the breakfast in 2022 as a way to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and dedication of wage (part-time) employees, said Tara Torkelson, JMU’s coordinator of employee well-being.

"We are grateful for all our wage employees and the roles that they play here on campus," Torkelson said. "It’s an honor to be able to host this appreciation breakfast for them."

Torkelson said the university has more than 400 wage employees and she hopes participation at the event will grow for years to come.
