East Campus to resume normal operations

JMU News

3:45 p.m. update: The repairs to the broken water line have been completed by staff with JMU Facilities Management and operations will fully return to normal in the coming hours.

As previously communicated, classes that start today (Dec. 5) at 5 p.m. or later, will meet as scheduled unless you’ve heard directly from your instructor.

All residence halls are functioning normally. In addition, academic buildings, Festival Conference and Student Center and Rose Library will open by 5 p.m. Your continued patience is appreciated as it may take some time for the heat and hot water in the buildings to fully return. As the heat circulates throughout East Campus, the temperatures from one building to another may vary. It is recommended to dress in layers as the heat fully returns to ensure our campus community is comfortable.

All classes and campus operations will continue under normal operations tomorrow, Dec. 6.

Thank you all for your patience and cooperation during these unforeseen events.

Water main break disrupts East Campus

Due to a water main break on East Campus, several residence halls and academic buildings are currently without hot water and/or heat. This incident is isolated only to East Campus.

The following buildings will be closed today, Thursday, Dec. 5.

  • King Hall
  • Engineering and Geosciences Building
  • Physics and Chemistry Building
  • Bioscience Building
  • Leeolou Alumni Center
  • Rose Library
  • Festival Conference and Student Center

Classes that are held only in the listed buildings on East Campus and begin before 5 p.m. will be canceled today, Thursday, Dec. 5. Faculty and staff assigned in these specific buildings should work from home and not report to the building.

Faculty have several options for making up missed instruction time, as detailed in JMU Policy 1309. Students should check with their professors for clarification as individual instructors will determine the option for making up class time. The official makeup day for today’s closing will be Dec. 7.

Students residing in the following residence halls may stay in their room as long as they are comfortable; however, these residence halls currently do not have hot water and heat. As the day goes on the temperature in the building will slowly get cooler. The Atlantic Union Bank Center and UREC will be open and available to accommodate students as needed throughout the day. UREC and Godwin Hall have shower facilities available to students if needed and E-Hall will also be open.

Impacted residence halls:

  • Chandler Hall
  • Chesapeake Hall
  • Shenandoah Hall

JMU Facilities crews are working expeditiously to resolve the water main break and resume normal operations as fast as possible. We appreciate your cooperation and patience as this is resolved.

Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
