Emma Wiltz
From Student Entrepreneur to Startup Success
NewsJames Madison University alumni Emma Wiltz graduated in 2023 with a major in Communication Studies and a minor in Entrepreneurship. Emma has actively applied her academic knowledge to her career ventures, using communication theories from the classroom to create real-world success.
During her junior year at JMU, Emma launched her vintage clothing business, Maverick Vintage. Managing all aspects of the business, from marketing to operations, she applied the principles she learned in the School of Communication Studies (SCOM) program. “SCOM taught me how to target the right audience and communicate effectively, which was essential in building my brand,” she explains.
Now working as an executive assistant at Odyseek, an AI career platform, Emma continues to draw from her SCOM education. “Whether I’m pitching an idea or working on messaging, I use my communication skills daily,” she says. Understanding people and crafting effective messages remain at the core of her professional work.
Emma encourages students to take risks, build portfolios, and leverage networking opportunities. “I didn’t follow a traditional path, but I created value in every role I took,” she notes. Her involvement in Young Life College and running Maverick Vintage showed future employers that she was more than just a student—she was a capable entrepreneur.
Beyond her role at Odyseek, Emma is passionate about helping college students navigate post-graduation life. She shared insights on balancing the challenges of early career life with determination and networking. “A lot of people right out of college don’t want to be at the bottom, but it’s a chance to prove that you’re trustworthy and can add value,” she says. Emma advises students to go beyond the tasks given to them, think creatively, and consistently show their value. “Think creatively and go the extra mile wherever you are. Don’t be afraid to reach out for advice or connections,” she adds. “Be scrappy, stay hungry, and always look for ways to stand out.”
