Jeffrey Tang named interim dean of JMU CISE

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Jeffrey Tang has been named the new interim dean of the College of Integrated Science and Engineering, effective July 1.

Tang has served as the associate dean since 2012, and his new appointment reflects his extensive experience andJeffrey Tang dedication to academic excellence and leadership.

Since joining JMU in 2005 as a visiting assistant professor, Tang has consistently shown his dedication to the institution’s values and goals. His career has been marked by several significant milestones. In 2006, he accepted a full-time tenure-track position in the social context area of the Integrated Science and Technology program. In 2010, he became the assistant department head of ISAT and was appointed associate dean with the formation of CISE in 2012.

During his tenure as associate dean, Tang has proactively advocated for inclusivity and accessibility within CISE. He played a key role in enhancing accessible spaces and introducing a new multi-sensory room set to open this fall. His influence extends beyond CISE, significantly impacting university-wide initiatives such as improving commencement ceremonies, aligning student recruitment strategies with Admissions, and refining the course scheduling process.

As he steps into his new role as interim dean, Tang plans to strengthen the college’s identity and raise the profile of the outstanding technology programs in CISE. “For years, we have been educating outstanding, technically competent graduates who quickly make substantive contributions wherever they go to work and live.” He also envisions expanding interdisciplinary collaboration across the university. “CISE is at its best when we are working together and working with others to solve problems and make a positive difference in the world.”

Tang’s leadership philosophy is grounded in valuing every member of the CISE and JMU community. He places a strong emphasis on the importance of recognizing the contributions of faculty, staff, and students, and he is committed to leading with an appreciation for the collective team effort that drives the university’s successes.

Jeff brings proven leadership experience to this role and a strong commitment to supporting student learning,” said Bob Kolvoord, interim provost. “He will advocate for faculty, staff and students across all CISE programs. The future of CISE is in good hands.”

Tang holds a master’s and doctorate in History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s in Economic and Social History from Oxford University.
