As headlines declare relations between the United States and China have sunk to a new low, we talk with China expert and James Madison University Political Science Professor Dr. Edward Yang. Dr. Yang discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting domestic politics in China, the trajectory of domestic reform and prospects for democratization. In addition, Dr. Yang addresses issues the global health crisis has raised with regards to China-Taiwan and China-U.S. relations, and recommends steps that can be taken to improve and reinvigorate diplomacy between China and the U.S.

A native of mainland China, Dr. Yi Edward Yang received his bachelor’s degree in diplomacy and international affairs from China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU) in Beijing and his Ph.D. in political science from Texas A&M University. Professor Yang specializes in Chinese politics, foreign policy decision-making, political psychology, and international political economy.
