Windows 10 End of Support in 2025

Information Technology-Computing

Note: JMU departments should replace any computers built before 2019, now or in early FY2025.

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. JMU Information Technology (IT) has been testing and configuring the next version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, Windows 11, for some time and plans to release it for installation on campus computers within the year.

With many departments planning to refresh computer equipment using end-of-year funds, JMU IT would like to take this opportunity to remind you to replace any computer equipment that cannot run Windows 11. Currently, there are nearly 700 computers on campus that do not meet the minimum requirements for the new operating system. You may be unsure about your computer, here are some good rules of thumb: most computers built after 2019 will work with Windows 11, and JMU IT recommends that departments should consider replacing any computer that is out of warranty.

If there are insufficient funds in your department’s budget to replace outdated computer equipment in this fiscal year, please work with your department leadership to replace your equipment early next fiscal year. JMU IT cannot allow university-owned computers to run an operating system that is no longer supported by the manufacturer. Unsupported software does not receive security patches, leaving members of the JMU community and JMU’s data vulnerable to new security threats and exploits by attackers.
