JMU’s new interdisciplinary Graduate Health Policy Certificate (HPC) provides individuals with a bachelor’s degree in any field the opportunity to build expertise in health policy analysis and advocacy. In this program, students learn how to influence healthcare decisions at local, state, national, and international levels. Graduates prepare to work across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, to shape the future of healthcare.
Students may begin this program during Spring or Fall semesters. The program’s first cohort will begin in Spring of 2025. Students will engage in courses that focus on economics, ethics, health communications and health policy advocacy. “Our goal is to provide advanced knowledge and hands-on experience in health policy for those who want to advocate, influence, and create policies that improve the future of healthcare,” says Dr. Jeannie Corey, Professor and Program Coordinator. HPC is unique in that it integrates perspectives of faculty from a variety of specialties who approach health policy from multiple perspectives, including nursing, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, economics, and communications.
“Our students will get the chance to collaborate with health policy organizations,” explains Dr. Corey. Students will also get firsthand insight into how policies are created and implemented. “We aim to empower our students to become the voices policymakers are eager to hear.” adds Dr. Corey. HPC students have an opportunity to be leaders in shaping policy. Students, with their diverse experiences, have unique perspectives that can truly drive change.
HPC students must complete 4 courses, and the program may be completed in as little as one academic year. Two core courses and two electives that allow students to focus on areas of greatest interest.
