When I decided to come to the U.S. for graduate studies, I had no idea how much it would change me. I was excited, scared, and curious about what was ahead. As I finish my third semester of grad school, I look back and reflect on how much I’ve grown. I’ve become more resilient, independent, and full of experiences that have shaped me in ways I didn’t expect.
Graduate school has made me more creative, independent, and I’ve gained the skills needed to succeed in my field. I’ve been introduced to new theories that push me to think differently and approach problems with new perspectives. I’ve honed my writing, teaching, and design skills, and now I feel more confident when I create content. Grad school has also taught me project management— balancing multiple tasks, setting priorities, and leading projects from start to finish. The professors have been incredibly supportive and encouraging. These experiences have made me a more confident, adaptable, and proactive student.
Living alone, far from my family, has made me more independent in finding solutions and taking care of myself. Back home, I had gotten into the habit of asking my older sister for help on everything. Now, I no longer ask her where to go for help with a specific issue. Instead, I search for answers and figure things out on my own. This past year has made more confident in managing my own life, but also made me a quieter person. I’ve learned to enjoy my alone time more, taking moments to reflect on the experiences I’m living and the growth I’m going through. I’m now more self-aware and happier in my own company.
Adjusting to a new culture wasn’t easy at first. A lot of things felt so different—the food, the conversations, lifestyle. It took me a few months, but I’ve come to adapt. I still feel like I learn something every day, and the kindness and thoughtfulness of the people around me continues to impress me.
I came here not knowing what to expect, but now I’m leaving with a deeper understanding of who I am and where I want to go. Grad school has shown me how much I’m capable of, and I’m excited to take everything I’ve learned into what comes next.
