EXHIBITIONS
Rebecca Silberman (Associate Professor, Art) exhibited “12x12” at the Darrin-McHone Gallery at the Arts Council of the Valley in Harrisonburg Va., April 4-26.
GRANTS (awarded April 2014)
Dr. Reid N. Harris (Professor, Biology) and Molly C. Bletz (Graduate Assistant, Biology) received $15,000 from Global Wildlife Conservation for support to determine which bacterial species from the skins of Malagasy frogs can act as skin probiotics.
Kimberlee Hartzler-Weakley (Administrator, Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services) received $79,506 from the Virginia Department of Health for the Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia to improve campus-based suicide prevention and intervention at Virginia institutions of higher education.
Elizabeth A. Hoge (Business Adviser, Shenandoah Small Business Development Center) received $7,500 from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development in the form of a Building Entrepreneurial Economics Planning grant. The grant will help to develop a regional conference focused on businesses, provide access to technical assistance to business owners and host a “pitch” session for entrepreneurs and regional tradeshow focusing on “Made in Virginia” food items.
Dr. W. Christopher Hughes (Professor, Physics and Astronomy) and Dr. Brian H. Augustine of High Point University received $105,151 from the National Science Foundation for “RUI: Modification and characterization of polymer surfaces with applications in microfluidic neural circuit development – Year 2.” The project aims to use a range of experimental and theoretical tools to predict, design and optimize experimental conditions resulting in polymeric surfaces that stimulate improved metal and cellular adhesion.
Joyce H. Krech (Director, Shenandoah Small Business Development Center) received $1,250 from the City of Buena Vista for support of the Central Region Small Business Development Center for fiscal year 2014.
Dr. Reid J. Linn (Dean, Graduate School), Cheryl L. Henderson (Co-Director, Training/Technical Assistance Center) and John T. McNaught (Coordinator, Training/Technical Assistance Center) received $115,000 from the Virginia Department of Education for the Region 5 Training and Technical Assistance Center: Section 611 Support to continue to assess needs and services provided to consumers in Region 5 following each consultation and training event provided by the center’s staff.
Dr. Christy L. Ludlow (Professor, Communication Sciences and Disorders) received $17,834 from the National Institutes of Health for “Validity and Reliability of Diagnostic Methods and Measures of Spasmodic Dysphonia – Supplement.” The project will complete development of the instrument and a training manual for the identification of attributes of spasmodic dysphonia.
HONORS
Dr. Michael K. Davis (Assistant Professor, Communication Studies; Director, Debate) was honored with the George Zeigelmueller Award by the National Debate Tournament. This award is given annually to a debate coach who demonstrated a long and substantial career of dedication to the profession of student learning in debate and public policy, substantial evidence of long-term influence on the lives and careers of student debaters and substantial evidence of success in debate over that career.
Dr. Jon M. Thompson (Professor, Health Sciences; Director, Health Services Administration Program) accepted the 2014 Higher Education Network Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives on behalf of JMU’s Health Services Administration Program. The award, given to the undergraduate healthcare management program in the U.S. that demonstrates the highest level of engagement with ACHE, was presented at the Leon I. Gintzig Memorial Lecture and Luncheon at the ACHE Annual Congress on Healthcare Leadership in Chicago on March 26, 2014.
PRESENTATIONS
Dr. Edward J. Brantmeier (Assistant Professor; Learning, Technology and Leadership Education) presented “Spirituality, Gandhi and Critical Peace Education” for the International Conference of Education and Spirituality sponsored by the Brazilian Association of Spiritist Pedagogy and the University of Santa Cecelia, Sao Paulo, Brazil, in April.
Dr. Edward J. Brantmeier (Assistant Professor; Learning, Technology and Leadership Education) and Dr. Noorie Kelsey Brantmeier (Assistant Professor; Learning, Technology and Leadership Education) co-presented a paper, “Qualitative Inquiry, Intersubjectivity and Advaita-Vedanta (Nonduality),” at the American Educational Research Association Conference in Philadelphia in April 2014.
Dr. Edward J. Brantmeier co-presented with Professor Jing Lin of the University of Maryland on their co-edited book series on peace education with Information Age Publishing at the peace education special interest group business meeting of the American Educational Research Association. This invited presentation was at the annual AERA conference in Philadelphia in April 2014.
JMU students K. Doss and L. Hamilton, advised by Dr. Jeanne Z. Wenos (Assistant Professor, Health Sciences), presented “Resilience, routines, stability and their impact on the transitional process from foster care to independent living” at the 2014 American Occupational Therapy Association’s Annual Conference and Exposition. They presented on April 3 in Baltimore.
JMU students H. Mata and A. Mikkola, advised by Dr. Jeffrey D. Loveland (Professor, Health Sciences), presented “Occupations Pursued by Individuals after Gastric Bypass Surgery” at the 2014 American Occupational Therapy Association’s Annual Conference and Exposition. They presented on April 5 in Baltimore.
Elizabeth E. Richardson (Instructor, Health Sciences), Dr. Jeanne Z. Wenos (Assistant Professor, Health Sciences), and JMU students J. Palmer, A. Wilson, T. Mata, K. Chapman, L. Wine and B. D’Alessio presented “Exploring the effectiveness of three occupation-based programs designed to address child and adolescent mental health within a community-based setting” at the 2014 American Occupational Therapy Association’s Annual Conference and Exposition. They presented on April 3 in Baltimore.

Richardson (Instructor, Health Sciences) presented “Instilling the relevance of healthy lifestyles in occupational therapy students to promote wellness in practice” at the 2014 American Occupational Therapy Association’s Annual Conference and Exposition. They presented on April 3 in Baltimore.
Dr. Amy Russell Yun (Assistant Professor, Health Sciences) and JMU students M. Valiente and A. Ramdeen presented “To the clinic & beyond: Applying experiential learning to design & implement occupation-centered programs in real life” at the 2014 American Occupational Therapy Association’s Annual Conference and Exposition. They presented in April in Baltimore.
